1813 Petition of Inhabitants of Mobile County

compiled by Lisa R. Franklin RN

"To the Honourable General Assembly of the Mississippi Territory, the humble petition of the undersigned Inhabitants of the County of Mobile respectfully showeth:

--That they have been informed that a majority of the Commissioners appointed to establish the seat of Justice for the County of Mobile did, in the month of February last, make some arrangements for fixing the said seat of Justice, on the east side of the Bay of Mobile; and that, although not compelled to do so, they have persisted in selecting the same place notwithstanding the surrender of the town of Mobile to American Jurisdiction.

--That the said place so fixed upon, although called the town of Blakeley, is entirely uninhabited, and is accessible to the people of Mobile and to the bulk of the population of the county, only by a water carriage, often dangerous, of at least 12 miles.

--That there are not more than twelve dwelling houses within twenty miles of proposed Court-house, on the same side of the Bay

--That the nature of the land, east of the Bay, does not encourage the expectation of any immediate increase of population.

--That the town of Mobile is near the centre of the counry, contains a considerably larger population than the whole County besides; and is, moreover, convenient to a greater number of Inhabitants, out of the Town, than any other spot which could be fixed upon within the limits of the County.

--Wherefore your Petitioners humbly pray that, that consideration may be paid to public convenience, which comports with the spirit of a Republican Government--that the interests of the many may not be sacrificed to the interests of the few, or to the caprices of men in office; and that your Honorable Body will be pleased finally to establish the seat of Justice for the County of Mobile, within the town of Mobile, as it now exists, or as it may be, enlarged by an act of the General Assembly--

NOTE: As would be expected, a large number of signers of this petition are apparently French and Spanish. As a result there were some abbreviations not familiar to "American English". However, I have determined that they are likely intended to be indicative of the following names according to the key (* or **) noted beside the name.
* - appears as J with a lowercase "n" raised to the right of it and likely indicates the name French given name Jean.

** - appears as J with a lowercase "n" raised to the right of it, as above, and a capital B with lowercase "tt" raised to its right and likely indicative of the French given names Jean Baptiste.
