Descendants of Abraham Danford
Barbour County, AL

Generation No. 1

1. ABRAHAM1 DANFORD was born Abt. 1782 in South Carolina, and died Bet. 1850 - 1860 in Barbour County, AL. He married SARAH TABITHA (NEE ?) DANFORD Abt. 1809 in North Carolina. She was born Abt. 1785 in South Carolina, and died December 1860 in Barbour County, AL.

Notes for ABRAHAM DANFORD:
The first US Census in 1790 for South Carolina contained:
• Abraham Danford
• two males less than 16 years of age
• four females.

Judging from ages and places of birth, The Abraham in the 1850 Barbour County Alabama Census was probably the son of Abraham Danford, head of household in South Carolina in 1790.

Abraham Danford is listed on the 1830 US Census for Pike County, Alabama with nine children; seven males and two females.

The following information was taken from the 1832 census taken to create Barbour County from a portion of eastern Pike County:
• Abraham Danford
• Eight males less than 21
• Two males (including self) over 21
• One female less than 21
• One female (spouse) over 21

A separate entry was William Danford, over 21.

In 1833, Abraham is enumerated in Barbour County, Alabama with a family of ten children; nine males and one female. There was a male child born between the date of the 1830 US Census in Pike County, Alabama and the Barbour County local census in 1832. In addition, one female that was 15-20 years of age in 1830 was either married or deceased by 1833.

Neither Abraham nor any of his male children are listed in the 1840 US Census for Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi or Texas. But they re-appear in the 1850 US Census for Barbour County, Alabama.

The following information was taken from the 1850 US Census for Barbour County, Alabama:
• Abraham Danford, age 68, born in South Carolina,
• Abraham's wife, Sarah, age 65, born in South Carolina,
• Martha, a daughter, age 24, born in Alabama,
• Edmund, a son, age 14, born in Alabama.

The 1900 US Census for Dale County, Alabama contained:
• James Pearson Danford, born January 1832 in Pike County, Alabama
• Martha P. (wife)
• Sarah Carr (Daughter)
• Abraham H. Carr (Grandson)
Note: The 1900 census identifies relationship of family members to the head of household, month and date of birth and place of birth.

William Francis Danford was the son of James Danford and Martha P. Gilmore Brooks. William’s death certificate identified his father as James Danford, born Pike County, Alabama.

If we accept that the 1852 Barbour County, Alabama marriage between James Danforth (sic) and Mary Scott (first wife) is our man, James Pearson Danford , and the female named Sarah Carr on the 1900 Dale County, Alabama census, living in James Danford's household, with a son named Abraham Carr, and identified as his daughter and grandson - then it is possible that James Pearson Danford is the youngest son of Abraham and Sarah Danford.

Points in support of this conclusion:

• James' daughter, Sarah, named in honor of his mother, Sarah Danford, wife of Abraham
• Sarah's son, Abraham Carr, named in honor of her grandfather, Abraham Danford
• James' birthplace is recorded as Pike County on William Francis "Bill" Danford’s (James’ son) death certificate. Note: Barbour County was created from a portion of eastern Pike County in 1832.
• There was a male child born to Abraham and Sarah between the date of the 1830 US Census in Pike County, Alabama and the Barbour County local census in 1832.
• Abraham and Sarah had sons, Thomas, Joseph, William, and Daniel who each had a son named James.
• William, son of Abraham, named a son James, perhaps in honor of his youngest brother. James Pearson Danford had a son named William Francis "Bill", perhaps in honor of his older brother.
• James and son Bill Danford and their spouses are buried at Bethany Baptist Church near New Brockton, Alabama. Dawson Danford, the son of William, grandson of Abraham, is buried there also. Dawson’s wife, Laura Brooks, is the daughter of Martha P. Gilmore, widow of Seaborn Brooks, who married second to James P. Danford. Laura and Bill were half brother and sister.

The youngest known child of Abraham and Sarah is Edward (or Edmund), born 13 Aug 1829. James P. was born 8 Jan 1832. Sarah, Abraham's wife, would have been 47 years of age at the time of James' birth.

The dates, locations, circumstances, and the naming pattern point to the strong possibility that James Pearson Danford was youngest child of Abraham and Sarah Danford.

One sticking point, James Pearson Danford did not marry Mary Scott until 1852 in Barbour County, Alabama, but, he did not appear on the 1850 census in the household of Abraham and Sarah.

Notes for SARAH TABITHA (NEE ?) DANFORD:
Tibitha (sic) Danford, age 70, a widow who was born in North Carolina died in December, 1860 after a four day illness according to the 1860 Mortality Schedule for Barbour County, Alabama. Sarah, wife of Abraham, is the logical person this entry refers to.

2. THOMAS JEFFERSON2 DANFORD, SR. (ABRAHAM1) was born Abt. 1810 in North Carolina, and died Bef. 1880 in Leon County, TX. He married VIRGINIA LOUISA SLOAN Abt. 1836, daughter of JOHN SLOAN and UNKNOWN SLOAN. She was born Abt. 1818 in Georgia, and died 1891 in Grimes County, TX.

Notes for THOMAS JEFFERSON DANFORD, SR.:
Thomas Danford is listed on the 1850 US Census for Barbour County, Alabama, occupation - Blacksmith.

"DANFORD" BROTHERS ENLIST and Serve in Same Regiment:
Submitted by Verna Smith Bice

Alexander "Alex" DANFORD was born in Barbour County in c 1839 to Thomas Jefferson Danford Sr. and Virginia Louisa Sloan who are found in Barbour County by 1823. Virginia Louisa Sloan is the daughter of John Sloan, Sr., b.1784, Ireland, and died in Barbour County in the mid 1850's.

The Commissioner of Pensions records show that Alex Danford, of Company A, 45th Alabama Infantry, Confederate States Army, enlisted on March 10, 1862. The records of prisoners of war show that Alex Danford, private , Company H, 1st Alabama Infantry, was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina, May 1, 1865.

The records indicate that he surrendered at Greensboro, N.C. with General Johnson in the Spring of 1865. Alex married Mary Miller on August 26, 1860 in Barbour County.

Information obtained from an 1832 census taken to create Barbour County, Alabama and the 1850 and 1860 Barbour County, Alabama Federal Censuses and "Rural Land Owners of Barbour County Alabama 1851", by Marie H. Godfrey indicates that Thomas J. Danford was the son of Abraham and Sarah Danford who came to Alabama from South Carolina prior to 1832 with their large family of nine sons and one daughter.

Thomas was a blacksmith living in Alabama by 1836. In 1867, he was living in Bullock County, Alabama. World Family Tree, Volume II, by Broderbund indicates that James Newton Danford, son of Thomas J. Danford, was born in Mobile, Alabama in 1853. However, as discussed above, the family of Thomas J., including James, was enumerated in the 1850 and 1860 Barbour County, Alabama Federal censuses.

Thomas apparently moved his family west after the Civil War and settled in Leon County, Texas. His son, John N. Danford died November 06, 1872 and was buried in Whitehall Cemetery, Grimes County, Texas. Thomas' siblings remained in and around Barbour County, Alabama. Thomas is buried in Tubb Cemetery, Leon County, Texas. His wife, Virginia Louisa Sloan, daughter of John Sloan, Sr. and Mary Grubbs, is buried in Whitehall Cemetery in Grimes County, Texas. There are descendants in many places in Texas, including: Nineveh, Buffalo, Alto, Crosby, Tyler, Palestine, and San Antonio, Texas who trace their ancestory to James Newton Danford, son of Thomas J. Danford. Unfortunately, of the thirteen children of Thomas and Louisa Danford, James Newton is the only one for whom detailed information has been located.

Thomas Jefferson Danford, Jr. was born May 09, 1843 in Barbour County, the son of Thomas Jefferson Danford Sr. and Virginia Louisa Sloan who are found in Barbour County by 1823. He enlisted with his brother Alex in Company A, 45th Alabama Infantry, Confederate States Army, on March 10, 1862 in Barbour County.

Both men surrendered and were paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina, May 1, 1865 while serving
under General Johnson. Thomas married Sue McAlpine in Barbour County and the couple moved to Grimes Co.,Texas with brother Alex and his family by 1870.

3. JOSEPH2 DANFORD, REV. (ABRAHAM1) was born January 15, 1813 in North Carolina, and died June 01, 1894 in Barbour County, AL. He married MALINDA JANE MCKELLER Bef. 1840, daughter of NEAL MCKELLER and SARAH MCINNIS. She was born 1818 in North Carolina, and died November 03, 1891 in Barbour County, AL.

Notes for JOSEPH DANFORD, REV.:
" Obituaries from Barbour County, Alabama Newspapers 1890-1905." compiled by Helen Foley, Eufaula, Alabama
The Clayton Courier
Saturday, June 9, 1894
" Mr. Joe Danford, age 82, of near Elamville (Alabama), died last Monday. He had been a resident of Barbour (County, Alabama) all his life."

This information obtained from the Barbour County, Alabama, US Census, dated 26 Sep 1850, dated 21 Jul 1860, and 23 August 1870, and from tombstone inscriptions in the Antioch Cemetery at the intersection of Dale County Road 8 and 15 south of Alabama route 51 near Clio, Alabama. Also, some notes are from the Clayton (Alabama) Courier, a local newspaper. Further information is from minutes of Barbour County, Alabama court records.

There are some discrepancies in ages found on tombstones and the information in the census. The death date reported in the obituary would have been June 4, 1894. The death date on the marker at Antioch is January 1, 1894.

Five of Joseph and Malinda's children were not mentioned in the will. 1) Abraham J. appeared in 1850 and 1860 census but not in 1870. He was a member of the 17th Battalion, Alabama Sharpshooters, CSA and may have died in the war. 2) Mary Polly Danford appeared in the 1850 and 1860 census but was not in the 1870 and 1880 or the will. 3) Catherine Danford, who may have been Margaret's twin, appeared in the 1860 and 1870 census but was not in the 1880 census nor was she mentioned in the will. 4) Sally Danford appeared in the 1860 census but not thereafter and was not mentioned in the will. 5) Daniel Danford died in June 1891 prior to the death of his parents, Joseph and Malinda Danford. He was therefore not mentioned in their will. However, Frances Anderson, wife of Jim Anderson was mentioned. Frances Anderson was probably Mary F. (Frances) Danford, daughter of Daniel Danford and Nicey M. Smith and granddaughter of Joseph and Malinda Danford. Two other young persons were named in the will, Malinda J. Danford, age 16 and Edmund Danford, age 12. Malinda and Edmund were surley grandchildren of Joseph and Malinda and perhaps also the children of Daniel and Nicey.

Joseph Danford is buried at Antioch Cemetery, Clio, AL

Malinda Jane McKeller Danford information obtained from the Barbour County, Alabama, US Census, dated 26 Sep 1850, dated 21 Jul 1860, 1870 census date unknown, and from tombstone inscriptions in the Antioch Cemetery near Clio, Alabama. (Inscription reads "aged 74 years") Also, some notes are from the Clayton Courier, a local newspaper. Source of her maiden name is "Early Settlers of Barbour County, Alabama," compiled by Marie H. Godfrey, Southern Historical Press, Inc., 1979, Reprinted 1992, pp. 188-189. Godfrey reported that Sarah McKeller, sister of John B. McInnis and her daughter Jane Danford were listed as heirs in John B. McInnis' will.

4. WILLIAM2 DANFORD (ABRAHAM1) was born July 16, 1820 in North Carolina, and died January 18, 1869 in Clayton, Barbour County, AL. He married MARY HERRING Abt. 1840. She was born March 22, 1825 in North Carolina, and died July 17, 1868 in Clayton, Barbour County, AL.

Notes for WILLIAM DANFORD:
The exact birth and death dates for William and Mary are from information submitted to the World Family Tree, Volume 82, Tree 240 by Jennie D. Brown who lives on L & L Tate Road in Samson, Alabama. Mrs, Brown got her informtion from Sabrina Hagler of Barbour County, Alabama. Sabrina got the information from her grandmother's family bible that has unfortunately been misplaced. The dates shown here are very believable, because William and Mary, although young, disappear from census records after 1860.

5. DANIEL2 DANFORD (ABRAHAM1) was born 1825 in North Carolina. He married DOROTHEA JANE MILLER October 26, 1845 in Barbour County, AL. She was born Abt. 1820 in Georgia.

Notes for DANIEL DANFORD:
The 1870 Bullock County US census contained the following family living at Bruceville. Note: Bullock county was created in 1866 from portions of Barbour, Pike, Monroe, and Montgomery Counties. Chances are, Daniel had not moved from Barbour, but was enumerated in the new county in 1870.

Daniel Danfor(th)d born about 1828 in North Carolina.
Lucinda (wife) born about 1840 in Georgia.
James (son) born about 1854 in Alabama.
Eliza (daughter) born about 1856 in Alabama.
Welthie (daughter) born about 1858 in Alabama.

The discription of this family matches the family of Daniel Danford, brother of Thomas, Joseph, William, et al - sons of Abraham Danford mostly of Barbour County Alabama. Differences include minor discrepancies in birthdates and the wife's name - Dorothea Jane vs. Lucinda. The latter could be a second wife. Welthie is probably the child known as W.M. Danford first thought to be a male.

Notes for DOROTHEA JANE MILLER:
Niece of John B. McInnis who died by 1865.

This above statement seems to indicate John B. McInnis died by 1865. However, with a little punctuation the statement might read "Dorothea Jane Miller, niece of John B. McInnis, died by 1865." That correction certaintly fits the assumption above that Lucinda was Daniel's second wife. Sarah, Mary, J.J., and Tammy were old enough by 1870 to be married and on their own. Eli is not listed on the 1870 census and perhaps died early.

"I am looking for any information on James P. (Pearson) Danford. According to the 1900 Census- Index, he resided in Rocky Head, Dale County, with his wife Martha P., daughter Sarah A. Carr and Grandson Aberham H. According the Census, he was born Jan. 1837 in Alabama. It is believed James P. had a prior marrage (wife unknown) and had two children from that marrage, Sarah and John. His marrage to Martha P. produced a son William Francis Danford who died in 1941 and is buried in the Bethany Cemetary, New Brockton, AL. I have a lot of information on Martha P. GILMORE BORRKS Danford but very little on James P. Would be happy to share any info regarding this family. I would like any info available on the Bethany Cemetary and burial plots. Please e-mail me at hjadk1931@aol.com because I might not be able to find my way back to this page."

Herb,

"Thank you for the certificate. Did you notice that the birthdate for Bill Danford on the Death Certificate and the date on his cemetery marker are one year different? (21 Sep 1867 vs. 22 Sep 1868) I wonder which one is correct?

Do you have any information on John Danford, son of James P. and (Mary Scott ?). I too have heard Mr. Zema and Mr. Dud refer to him as Uncle John, but have found nothing on him."

Abraham Danford and his wife Sarah were the head of the Danford's in Barbour County, Alabama with several sons and daughters.

James Pearson Danford is not connected (yet) to any of the Barbour County, Alabama Danfords. If we accept that the Barbour County, Alabama marriage between James Danford and Mary Scott is our man, and if the female named Sarah Carr on the 1900 Dale County, Alabama census, living in James Danford's houshold, with a son named Abraham Carr, is James' daugher; then, is it possible that James is the son of Abraham and Sarah Danford?

Questions:
1. Is James' daughter, Sarah, named in honor of his mother, Sarah Danford, wife of Abraham?
2. Is Sarah's son, Abraham Carr, named in honor of her grandfather, Abraham Danford?
3. If James Pearson Danford is the son of Abraham, and he did not marry Mary Scott until 1852, why did he not appear on the 1850 census in the household of Abraham and Sarah?
4. James' birthplace is recorded as Pike County on William Francis' death certificate. Possible explanation, Barbour County was created from a portion of eastern Pike County.

Note: The youngest known child of Abraham and Sarah is Edward (or Edmund), born 13 Aug 1829. James P. was born 8 Jan 1832. Sarah, Abraham's wife, would have been 47 years of age at the time of James' birth.

Abraham and Sarah had sons, Thomas, Joseph, William, and Daniel who each had a son named James.

The dates, circumstances, and the naming pattern point to the strong possibility that James Pearson Danford was youngest child of Abraham and Sarah Danford.

Mrs. M.P. Danford, from Coffee County, Alabama filed claim for a Confederate Widow's Pension (No. 28162) for the service of J.P. Danford in Company J, 39th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Enlistment records shown James P. Danford as a member of Company I, 39th Alabama Infantry Regiment, with an enlistment date of May 10, 1862 at Opelika, Alabama.

Alabama Death Records, 1908 - 1959, Volume 4 Certificate 147, Role 1, has "J.P. Danford died March 24, 1909 in Coffee County, Alabama."

14. ISSAC JAMES3 DANFORD (JOSEPH2, ABRAHAM1) was born November 09, 1840 in Barbour County, AL, and died December 13, 1918 in Graceville, Jackson County, FL. He married (1) MARY (NEE?) DANFORD. She was born Abt. 1840. He married (2) PARALEE MILLER December 11, 1882 in Jackson County, FL. She was born Abt. 1865.

Notes for ISSAC JAMES DANFORD:
" James F. Danford" is listed as a nine year old, born in Alabama, in the household of Joseph and Malinda Jane Danford on the 1850 Barbour County, Alabama census. The James F. entry is important, as war records will reveal later.

"James" was still living in the household of Joseph on the 1860 census, now 18 years old. On the 1870 Barbour County, Alabama census, "James" age 28, was head of a household, with wife Mary, age thirty, born in Georgia and daughter Elizabeth, age six.

The only feasible Barbour County, Alabama marriage record to fit the James and Mary as recorded on the 1870 census is "James O. Danford" to Mary Jane Dubose on August 24, 1865.

Jackson County, Florida Marriage Records, 1848 - 1900, Book E, page 513, contain an entry for I.J. Danford to Paralee Miller on December 11, 1882. Three years later, the 1885 Florida State Census, Jackson County, page 41, Household number 360 contained James Danford, age 46, wife Panela (sic), age 26, and son James F., age 2. The "as of date" for the census was June 1, 1885.

Joseph Danford's will was probated in Barbour County, Alabama on June 1, 1894. Heirs were identified as Alex Danford, Margaret Bullard (wife of Wilson Bullard), and John Danford all of Barbour County, Alabama and "Jim" Danford of Jackson County, Florida. Missing from this list are Abraham J., Mary "Polly," Catherine, Sally, and Daniel who died June 13, 1891.

On September 1, 1902, "I.J. Danford" applied for a Confederate pension. He stated that he enlisted May 12, 1862 in McSwain's Company from Barbour County, Alabama (Company C, 39th Alabama Infantry Regiment.) He said he served until the close of the war and was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina "at the close of the war." I.J. stated, "I was wounded in the left hand in the Battle of Missionary Ridge, Georgia." He went on to say, "I do solemnly swear that I was born on the 9th day of November 1840 in Barbour County, Alabama . . . I was a bona-fide citizen of this state (Florida) on January 1885 and have continuously resided in this state since that date." This statement was signed at Graceville, Florida.

Apparently I.J. began drawing a pension for service to the Confederacy and continued drawing until an amendment to the pension law about 1908. After that date, the pension file contains some thirty-six pages of the most bureaucratic stumbling this writer has ever seen. There were repeated letters, over a two year period, from county officials to the pension department in Tallahassee and from there to Montgomery, Alabama and Washington, D.C. trying to ascertain if I.J. Danford had served in the 39th from Barbour County, Alabama as he claimed. Each reply met with the response, "The name I.J. Danford has not been found on the rolls, on file in this office, of the 39th Alabama Infantry Regiment, CSA, nor has any record been found of the capture or parole of a man of that name and organization." Finally, a Mr. W.L. Taylor wrote a blistering letter to the Florida Comptroller on I.J.'s behalf on January 31, 1910. In the letter, Mr. Taylor mentioned Doug Campbell, Sheriff of Geneva County, Alabama, as a member of Company A, 39th Alabama who could give proof of I.J.'s service. A response to Mr. Taylor's letter came on February 8, 1910. Someone in Washington had added the following words to their heretofore standard response: "the records (do however) show that H.J. Danford, James Danford, and Abrah J. Danford served in that company (Company C, 39th Alabama). Their records will be furnished if desired." This information broke the logjam. A couple of more letters exchanged, one in which an official asked for I.J.'s full name and another in which the aforementioned Mr. Taylor stated on March 2, 1910 "I have just received information that Mr. Danford's name is Isaac James Danford." Mr. Taylor must have been a man of some influence, because on March 26, 1910, Thomas M. Owens from the Dapartment of Archives and History, Montgomery, Alabama wrote a letter to the Florida Comptroller in which he identified James A. Burke, Elamville, Alabama; William H. Chambers, Eufaula, Alabama; John W. Davis, Clio, Alabama; John Deloach, Clio, Alabama; and William H. Lewis, Midland City, Alabama as survivors of Company C, 39th Alabama who might help Mr. Danford's claim. Mr. Owens went on to say "I wish to renew my assuranees (sic) of (my) willingness to assist your office at any and all times in perfecting the records . . . of any old soldier . . . ." The last few letters stood in stark contrast to the previous two years of out-of-hand dismissal.

On March 30, 1910, The Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D.C. provided a memorandum to the Comptroller, State of Florida that stated, "The records show that __ James Danford, private, Company C, 39th Alabama Infantry, Confederate States Army, was enlisted May 13, 1862, at Clayton, Alabama by Colonel D.W. Seals for three years, and that prior to June 30, 1862, he was transferred to Company B, Battalion Sharpshooters. The records show that James F. Danford (remember the James F. census entry of 1850?), private, Company B, 17th Battalion Alabama Sharpshooters, Confederate States Army, enlisted at the same place, on the same date, by the same officer. On the last company roll on file, dated November 1, 1863, he was reported present. No later record of him has been found. The records further show that Alex J. Miller was Captain, Winston Andrews 2nd Lieutenant, and Tom Adams 2nd Lieutenant of Company C, 39th Alabama Infantry, Confederate States Army."

Homer Jones, Dale County Historian, wrote that "A.J. (Danford), age 18 and James Danford, age 21, appear on a muster roll dated May 15, 1862 at Opelika, this was Captain Colin McSwean's Company C of the 39th; in June 1862." He continued, "the 17th Battalion, Alabama Sharpshooters was organized by taking Company C of the 39th and one company from the 19th Alabama Infantry, in August 1864."

Isaac James Danford's pension was reinstated April 1, 1910 at $120 per year for service as a member of Company C, 39th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Confederate States of America. At the time, Seventy-year old James Danford lived at Graceville, Florida with his wife Paralee, where he owed 40 acres of land and a mule.

The pension file contains James' subsequent death date and location, his widow's name and their marriage date and location. Paralee Miller, was obviously his second marriage.

Based on census data, service records, and information in Joseph's will, Isaac James "Jim" Danford is the son of Joseph Danford and Malinda Jane McKeller. Joseph and Malinda are buried at Antioch Baptist Church near Clio, Alabama. The Abrah J. Danford mentioned as a member of the 39th was Abraham J. Danford, Issac James' brother. Joseph Danford, father of Private A.J. Danford, filed a claim for the effects of his deceased son on January 15, 1863. Alexander was killed sometime prior to that time. Isaac James Danford is probably buried in or near Graceville, Florida.

Joe Danford registered for the Civilian Draft 1917-1918 as a resident of Jackson County, Florida and gave his birtdate as February 2, 1890 and his birthplace as Marianna, Florida. There is a Joe Danford, born February 2, 1891, died October 16, 1936 buried at Marvin Chapel, Graceville, Jackson County, Florida. Jackson County Marriage Records contain only one male Danford, other than I.J. He is Joseph Danford who married Rena Fountain on April 30, 1911, Book 9, page 349. This could be James and Paralee Miller's son. There is only one female Danford in the marriage records. Callie Danford married H.J. Jarman on November 8, 1908, Book 7, page 297. This could be James and Paralee's daughter.

Although, Isaac James Danford apparently lived until December 13, 1918, he has not been found on the 1900 census.

Notes for PARALEE MILLER:
Paralee Danford, a 45 year old widow is listed on the 1910 census in Jackson County, Florida with sons, Joseph age 19 and Alexander age 10. Paralee's birth year, according to the information on the census was about 1865. Pension records indicate that Isaac, Paralee's husband died in 1918. However, this census reveals she was a widow in 1910.

15. JOHN JACKSON "JACK"3 DANFORD (JOSEPH2, ABRAHAM1) was born August 19, 1847 in Barbour County, AL, and died April 19, 1921 in Barbour County, AL. He married AMANDA "MANDY" HALES November 14, 1876 in Barbour County, AL, daughter of OWEN HALES and SUSAN DICKSON. She was born March 17, 1859 in Georgia, and died February 24, 1928 in Barbour County, AL.

Notes for JOHN JACKSON "JACK" DANFORD:
John Danford, Elamville, Alabama entered the service of the Confederacy as a private in 1863 and served until the end of the war in Doster's Home Guards. He was counted in the census of Confederate soldiers living in Alabama in 1907. His birthdate was recorded as 19 August 1846 on the census of Confederate Soldiers Residing in Alabama in 1907. But his cemetery marker reads 19 August 1847. John was either 16 or 17 years old when he began fighting in the Civil War. Pension claim number 30594 witnessed by J.W. Carr and T.P.C. Phillips, all of Elamville, Alabama.

He is listed among the heirs of Joseph and Malinda J. Danford and identified as their son in the probate records of Barbour County, Alabama.

Information taken from tombstone inscriptions in the Antioch Cemetery on Dale County Road 15 near Clio, Alabama. Marriage certificate issued to John Danford and Amanda Hale(s) in Barbour County Alabama on 14 Nov 1876. (Amanda's son, Owen's funeral record recorded his mother as Amanda Bridgers - no explanation.) John was about 29 years of age and Amanda was 17 at the time of the marriage.

Amanda's mother, Susan Hale was living in the household with John Danford when the 1880 Barbour County Alabama census was taken.

The connection of Owen J. Danford to John Jackson Danford was made by talking to William Talmadge "Bill" Danford Jr., Eufaula, Alabama on October 4, 2000.

Bill told me that his grandfather's full name was Owen Jackson Danford and his grandmother was Erin Lodusky Turon Helms. Bill said his grandmother always said that the family was Scotch/Irish and was very proud of that fact. Bill remembers that his grandmother was very knowledgable of the family history. If a written record, such as a Bible was kept, Bill believes it would be in the Albert O'Neal Danford's, line.

Sources have referred to John Danford variously as Jack, Jackson, and another as two separate men. However, the best information and dates indicates that the man was named John Jackson Danford and was sometimes called Jack. Previous research revealed that John "Jack" Danford, son of Joseph Danford, had a daughter named Mollie who married Nicodemus Campbell.

Bill remembers going with grandmother Erin to visit "Aunt Mollie and Uncle Nick when he was a young man. Jack Danford had a brother, Alexander, who married Julia Anderson, daughter of Charlie and Sarah Anderson. Alex had a son named Owen who died as an infant. Owen and his mother are buried at Salem Baptist Church, Skipperville, Alabama.

A check of the 1900 US Census for Barbour County, Alabama produced a family headed by John Danford, born August 1847 (this date agrees with his cemetery marker, but not the 1907 Confederate Soldier census), age 52. The wife was named Mandy, born 1860, age 40. The other inhabitants of the household were: Mollie Campbell, daughter, born February 1880; Nick Campbell, son-in-law, born 1878, age 22; Owen Danford, son, born 1884, age 16; and Marion Campbell, grandson, born January 1900. The census was taken on June 8, 1900. The family lived at Faulks Beat.

John, Mandy, and sons Owen age 26 and Preston age 8 lived at Faulk's Precinct, Barbour County, Alabama in 1910. Although the census identifies Preston as John and Mandy's son, it is possible he is Owen's son.

Lived at Arguta, Dale County, Alabama in 1920.

Bill Danford's supplying the full names of his family members combined with previous research of cemetery records, locations, and birthdates and the 1900 census assures us that Owen Jackson Danford is the son of John Jackson Danford and is descended from Abraham Danford through Joseph.

Mandy Danford was living at Skipperville, Dale County, Alabama in 1930 with her grandson, Jackson Campbell. Amanda's cemetery marker at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Clio, Alabama is obviously in error if she was living with her grandson in 1930.

16. ALEXANDER "ALEX"3 DANFORD (JOSEPH2, ABRAHAM1) was born March 1850 in Alabama, and died 1933 in Houston County, AL. He married (1) JULIA ANN ANDERSON Abt. 1869, daughter of CHARLES ANDERSON and SARAH ANDERSON. She was born February 18, 1852, and died September 27, 1891 in Alabama. He married (2) S.F. "FANNIE BELLE" HAGLER September 25, 1894 in Dale County, AL. She was born 1862 in Alabama. He married (3) SARAH JENNIE (NEE?) DANFORD Abt. 1902. She was born Abt. 1880.

Notes for ALEXANDER "ALEX" DANFORD:
Alexander served as the administrator of his mother's estate and is listed among the heirs of Joseph and Malinda J. Danford and identified as their son in the probate records of Barbour County, Alabama.

Julia A. Danford is buried at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery north of Skipperville, Alabama. On the tombstone is the inscription, "Julia Wife of Alex Danford." Buried next to her is Colie G. Danford, Owen F. Danford and Callie Danford; apparently her children. Colie's birth year on his tombstone is recorded as 2 Jun 1892, however, his mother's death date is recorded on her tombstone as 27 Sep 1891. Obviously one is in error.

The 1870 Barbour County, Alabama US census contained Alex and Julia Danford, ages 25 and 28 respectively. This information differs by ten years the information on Julia's tombstone.

World Family Tree (WFT) Volume 7 contains more information on the descendants of Alex Danford and his three wives. His first wife is identified as Juli Anderson. From the collective information, one may discern that Juli is actually Julia Ann Anderson, daughter of Charlie and Sarah Anderson. This contention is further supported by the fact that "Julia, wife of Alex Danford" is buried just a few feet from Charlie and Sarah Anderson at Salem Church Cemetery. Additionally, WFT list thirteen children of Alex Danford and Juli Anderson. Among those children is Kelly, Owen, and Cole Danford. Although the spelling is somewhat different, surely these are the three children; Colie G. (Cole), Owen F. (Owen), and Callie (Kelly) that are buried with Julia at Salem.

Julia's sister, Elizabeth, married Southward Segars. Another sister, Mary Ann, married William Riley "Bill" Segars, the father of Adam Joshua Segars. Mary Ann is buried next to Julia Danford at Salem. Adam Joshua and several of his children are buried nearby.

The 1900 US Census contained Alex and his second wife Fannie Hagler. Two of Alex's married sons, Joseph and Charles with their respective families are also found on the same page. The families lived at Faulks Beat, Barbour County, Alabama. Joseph, Alex's son, was living in consecutive households.

Sixty one year old Alexander and wife Gennie (sic) age 28, and Children Oscar age 14, Omie(sic) age 12, Dewey C. age 9, Henry age 6, Lyddie age 4 and Harvey age 1 year - 7 months were on the US census taken in May 1910 at Faulk's Beat in Barbour County, Alabama. The census indicated that the couple had been married 8 years, a first marriage for Gennie and a third for Alexander. Gennie had given birth to four children, three of who were living. The older children in the household; Oscar, Omie (sic), and Dewey were Alexander's children from his marriage to Fannie Belle Hagler.

In 1920, 70 year old Alex and wife Sarah J. and children; Henry C., Lydia, Harvey J., Harmon, and Lexie were living near Taylor in Houston County, Alabama. Joseph L., age 46, apparently Alex's son by his first wife, Julia Anderson, was living next door. The child named Lydia, age 4 and 14, on the 1910 and 1920 censuses, may be the same as one of the other girls (Bertha or Elizabeth) known to be members of the family from other sources.

John W. Grice, age 45 and his family were living in the same community with the Danford's at Piney Grove, Taylor Community, Houston County, Alabama in 1920. John's father, Erwin, age 74 and his aunt, Margaret Danford, age 66, were living with him.

17. MARGARET3 DANFORD (JOSEPH2, ABRAHAM1) was born April 15, 1851 in Alabama, and died June 30, 1902 in Barbour County, AL. She married WILSON B. BULLARD February 21, 1875 in Barbour County, AL, son of JAMES H. BULLARD. He was born August 10, 1845, and died November 15, 1923 in Barbour County, AL.

Notes for MARGARET DANFORD:
Margaret is listed among the heirs of Joseph and Malinda J. Danford and identified as the wife of Wilson Bullard and the daughter of Joseph and Malinda J. Danford in the probate records of Barbour County, Alabama.

Information obtained from the 1850, 1860, and the 1870 Barbour County, Alabama, US Census, dated 26 Sep 1850, and 21 Jul 1860 respectively, 1870 census date 23 Aug 1870, and from tombstone inscriptions in the Antioch Cemetery at the intersection of Barbour county road 8 and 15 south of Alabama route 51 near Clio, Alabama.

In addition to W.B. Bullard and his wife, M. (Margaret), there are graves for their daughter, Emma M. Bullard and the following:

18. DANIEL3 DANFORD (JOSEPH2, ABRAHAM1) was born March 05, 1859 in Barbour County, AL, and died June 13, 1891 in Barbour County, AL. He married NICEY M. SMITH February 14, 1878 in Barbour County, AL. She was born November 12, 1856, and died October 09, 1933 in Barbour County, AL.

Notes for DANIEL DANFORD:
Information taken from tombstone inscriptions in the Antioch Cemetery at the intersection of Barbour County Roads 15 and 8 south of Alabama Route 51 near Clio, Alabama. Daniel is buried in the vicinity of father, Joseph.

The 1880 Barbour County Alabama census contained the following family:
Danford, Dan Age 21 Born Alabama
Nicy Age 22 Born Alabama
Mary F. Age 1 Born Alabama

Birth and death information obtained from tombstone inscriptions in the Antioch Cemetery on Dale County Road 15 near the intersection of Alabama Route 10 near Clio, Alabama do not agree with the census age of Nicy.

Notes for NICEY M. SMITH:
Listed on the 1900 US census for Barbour County, Alabama as the wife of W.T. Carroll with her Carroll children and her son, E.D. Danford from her previous marriage to Daniel Danford. There must have been a divorce, because Daniel died in 1891. Nicey married W.T. Carroll in 1889 and had their first Child, Major, in 1890. Her marker at Antioch does not agree with the birthdate shown on the 1900 census.

Daniel Danford died in June 1891 prior to the death of his parents, Joseph or Malinda Danford.

19. JOHN M.3 DANFORD (WILLIAM2, ABRAHAM1) was born May 23, 1845 in Louisville, Barbour County, AL. He married ANNA "ANNIE" B. GRIFFIN February 09, 1868 in Barbour County, AL. She was born March 1839 in Alabama.

Notes for JOHN M. DANFORD:
1900 US census for Covington County, Alabama. J.M. Danford and wife Annie were living at River Falls Precinct. Both were born in Alabama and had been married 32 years. She had given birth to two children, only one was living in 1900. C.E. Danford, born June 1870, was living next door and is assumed to be J.M. and Annie's only living child. J.M. was a Livery by profession.

Escambia County -- Roster of General Clanton Camp United Confederate Veterans of Escambia County:

DANFORD, J.M. - Brewton, RFD4, B, 57th Alabama Infantry. Wounded at Peachtree Creek, Georgia as witnessed by S. E. Benton and J. Morgan Snead.

John M. Danford, living at Boykin, Alabama when the 1907 Census of Confederate Soldiers in Escambia County, Alabama was taken, was born May 23, 1845 in Louisville in Barbour County, Alabama. He entered the service of the Confederacy as a private soldier on May 19, 1863 at Eufaula, Alabama in Company B, 57th Alabama Infantry Regiment. He surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina and was paroled. Confederate Service Cards on file in the Alabama Archives, Montgomery, Alabama contain the same information. The service card is the source of his birthdate.

The information upon which the paragraph above is based is from a book at the Escambia County Courthouse copied by Lydia Grimes in 1996 and posted on the internet.

Note: Near the end of the war, Company B, 57th Infantry became Company G, 27th Alabama Infantry. The 27th Infantry surrendered May 1, 1865 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Sparsly populated Escambia County, Alabama, north of Pensacola, Florida, was formed from portions of Conecuh, Monroe & Baldwin Counties on December 10, 1868. Although the county seat was originally located at Pollard, it was moved to Brewton, Alabama in 1883. During the war of northern aggression, Pollard was the site of a Confederate Camp that guarded the railroad axis from Mobile to Montgomery, Alabama. The county name comes from a Choctaw word meaning cain or reed break.

According to Bureau of Land Management Records for Alabama, John M. Danford was granted homestead authority for 159 acres in Escambia County, Alabama on September 1, 1891. Authority: May 20, 1862: HOMESTEAD ENTRY-ORIGINAL (12 Stat. 392)

20. JAMES JOSEPH MADISON "JIM"3 DANFORD, SR. (WILLIAM2, ABRAHAM1) was born August 13, 1848 in Barbour County, AL, and died June 25, 1922 in Dale County, AL. He married SARAH JANE FAULK November 02, 1875 in Barbour County, AL, daughter of THOMAS FAULK and EMILY FAULK. She was born June 27, 1842 in Barbour County, AL, and died January 17, 1920 in Dale County, AL.

Notes for JAMES JOSEPH MADISON "JIM" DANFORD, SR.:
James J. Danford is identified as a member of the William Danford household in Barbour County, Alabama on the 1850 and 1860 censuses. He is head of household in 1870 with some of the younger siblings.

James Danford married Mary (sic Sarah) Jane Lee on November 2, 1875 in Barbour County, Alabama. Early Settlers of Barbour County, Alabama, Marie H. Godfrey, p. 90, shows that "James M. Danford married Sarah J. Faulk, born about 1849 (sic 1842), daughter of Thomas Faulk who was born about 1799 in North Carolina and died after 1860. Thomas was married to Emily "Denny" nee?, born about 1815 in Georgia. On p. 161, we find, "J.M. Danford married Sarah J. Polk (sic Faulk), former wife of Lovard Lee, (Sr.)."

There is no James Danford listed on the 1880 Barbour County, Alabama census. However, there is a Joseph M. Danford, age 31 born (about 1849). His wife is listed as Sarah J, age 38 (born about 1842.) The children are: Emily age 18, Susan (Susanah) age 14, Christopher (identified in Godfrey as Columbus) age 10, William J. age 3, Mary age 2, and James M. age 6 months. The first three children are Lovard Lee (deceased) and Sarah Jane Faulk's children. An additional person in the household is Emily Paulk (sic Faulk) mother-in-law. This information is in complete agreement with the family identified by Godfrey above, except James J. is now referred to as Joseph.

The William J. Danford, age 3, shown above on the 1880 census, was born about 1877. This information tracks with records at Holman Funeral Home in Headland, Alabama which reveal that William J. Danford was age 68 at the time of his death on August 9, 1945. His marker at the Midland City, Alabama has his birth as September 14, 1876. The funeral home records also identified William J. Danford’s parents as Jim Danford and Sarah Lee.

The 1900 US census for Dale County, Alabama, Brannon Precinct, taken 15 and 16 June 1900, identifies J.M. Danford, age 52, born 1848 as head of household with wife of 25 years, Sarah J, age 57, born June 1842 with a son, James M. Danford, age 20, born January 1880. William J. Danford, their other son, was living next door.

In 1910, James M. Danford, age 62 and wife Sarah, age 67 lived at Midland City, Alabama.

We know from Godfrey and marriage records that James Danford married Sarah Jane Lee, widow of Lovard Lee. We also know that she was nee Faulk. The elderly lady living in the household of Joseph M. and Sarah J. Danford cited above was named Emily Paulk (sic Faulk) and identified by Godfrey and identified on the 1880 census as Joseph’s mother-in-law. In addition, Joseph M. Danford and Sarah Jane Danford are buried in the Pinkard, Alabama Cemetery less than 5 miles from where William J. Danford is buried. The markers show Joseph birth and death as 13 August 1848 - 25 June 1922. Sarah’s was recorded as 27 June 1842 - 17 January 1920.

Alabama Death records 1908 - 1959, Vol 26, Role 2, page 12832, reveal that James "Madison" Danford died July 25, 1922.

There is little doubt that James "Jim" identified by Godfrey and the funeral home records and Joseph M. Danford listed on the 1880 Barbour County, Alabama census and buried at Pinkard, Alabama are the same person.

Taken collectively, the above information suggests that James J. Danford, son of William, grandson of Abraham was named James Joseph Madison "Jim" Danford.

Notes for SARAH JANE FAULK:
According to the 1900 US census, Barbour County, Alabama; Sarah had given birth to ten children with six still living in 1900. Judging from the age spans, the deceased children were probably Lee children by her first husband.

Alabama Death Records, 1908 - 1959, Volume 3 Role 2, Page 1176 has "Sarah J. Danford died January 17, 1920 in Dale County, Alabama."

21. WILLIAM HENRY3 DANFORD (WILLIAM2, ABRAHAM1) was born December 05, 1851 in Barbour County, AL. He married ANN CARTER December 22, 1869 in Barbour County, AL. She was born December 1849 in Georgia, and died Aft. 1910 in Coffee County, AL.

Notes for WILLIAM HENRY DANFORD:
William's birthdate and middle name is from Jennie Brown's information on Family Tree Maker Volume 82, Tree 240 and is unverified.

If the middle name is correct, Henry Danford married Ann Carter on December 22, 1869 in Barbour County, Alabama. By 1880, Ann Danford, age 27 and son William age 9 were living with Robert Carter, Ann's brother, in Louisville, Alabama. Henry is unaccounted for.

William Thomas "Tom" Danford has many descendants in Coffee County, Alabama. Tom's father, according to family legend left his wife and and Tom and went to Texas.

If this William Danford, son of William Danford and Mary Herring, is William Henry Danford who married Ann Carter - then he is Tom's father. Many circumstances point to this conclusion: 1) the marriage between Henry and Ann in Barbour County is the correct year to make Henry the son of William Danford and Mary Herring, 2) William and Mary both died young leaving the children to live with James, the older sibling - this would explain Henry marrying at age 18, 3)Ms. Brown's information records the exact birthdate and middle name to place him in William and Mary's family, 4) William, husband of Mary, had a brother named Thomas Jefferson Danford - who would be Henry's uncle, 5) Ann Carter Danford's child is named William Thomas Danford, perhaps named in honor of Henry's father and his uncle, 6) Thomas Jefferson Danford, Henry's uncle moved his family to Texas about 1871-1872 - this is the same time Henry went missing, 7) William Henry Danford's brother, Dawson "Dorsie or Doss" Danford moved from Barbour County, Alabama to New Brockton in Coffee County, Alabama - the same area where Tom's descendants are found 8) Tom lived with his daughter, Oree Danford Helms, wife of E.B. Helms, before his death. Oree Helms' daughter is Annette Helms Speigner who married Warren Speigner. They live in the Damascus Church Community in Coffee County, Alabama. Annett told this writer on 10 February 2002 that Tom Danford's name was William Thomas Danford and that he was an only child of a Danford man from Barbour County, Alabama. Annett, who was born in 1927, said she could remember Grandpa Tom living with her parents. She said he died in the early 1930's. Annett said that the family legend was that Tom's father left to "go to mill" one day and never returned. Attempts were made years later to learn something of him living in Texas, but nothing was found. Annett further stated that she knew of the Danford's buried at Bethany Baptist Church (Dawson), as are some of Annett's relative. Annett said that they "were the same set of Danfords" but did not know the relationship.

Notes for ANN CARTER:
Henry Danford married Ann Carter on December 22, 1869 in Barbour County, Alabama. By 1880, Ann Danford, age 27 and son William age 9 were living with Robert Carter, Ann's brother, in Louisville, Alabama. Henry is unaccounted for. Family legend among descendant is that Henry left to "go to mill" one day and never returned.

Her son, Thomas William "Tom" Danford married Annie English in Barbour County, Alabama on November 15, 1891.

Ann's birthdate is from the 1900 US census for Barbour County, Alabama where she continued living with her brother R.D. Carter in Faulk's Beat. Of interest, she is shown on the census as married. Apparently she never divorced Henry and never remarried. Mrs. Ann Danford was again counted in the home of Robert D. Carter in 1910.

22. DAWSON DANIEL "DOSS"3 DANFORD (WILLIAM2, ABRAHAM1) was born June 08, 1854 in Barbour County, AL, and died July 10, 1910 in Coffee County, AL. He married LAURA MELINDA BROOKS October 11, 1877 in Barbour County, AL, daughter of SEABORN BROOKS and MARTHA GILMORE. She was born August 02, 1860 in Coffee County, AL, and died December 26, 1945 in Elba, AL.

Notes for DAWSON DANIEL "DOSS" DANFORD:
The 1860 Barbour County census dated 21 August 1860, contained a family headed by William Danford with a 6 year old son named Dossie, born in Alabama.

The marriage license, issued at Clayton, Alabama on 9 October 1877 is for "Dorsie" Danford and Laura Brooks . D.B. Easterling, Justice of the Peace, married them on 11 October 1877 in Barbour County Alabama.

The 1880 census for Barbour County Alabama contained the following family:
Danford, Doss Age 25 Born Alabama
Laura " 19 Born "
Wm Thomas " 1 Born "
Doss was living next door to Caroline Gulledge and her daughter Mary and the grand children.

The above family lived at "Faulk's Beat" in Barbour County. Judging from the date of marriage and Laura's census age in 1880, one decerns that she was about 16 and Doss 22 when they married.

1900 census for Dale County, Alabama:
Danford, Daniel Age 48(46) Born Apr 1852 (or 1854)
Laura Age 40 Born Aug 1860
Willie T. Age 22 Born Aug 1878
Mary Age 17 Born Oct 1883
Arthur D. Age 9 Born Apr 1891
Connie M. Age 5 Born Jan 1895
Shellie Age 2 Born Sep 1898

Missing from this enumeration is Martha Melissa born after Willie. She was married in January 1900 to William Riley Segars and was therefore not counted in this census in the Danford household. From this census, one learns that Dawson's middle name is "Daniel" and that his son was called "Willie".

Also from the above census, one learns that the first child's complete name was "William Thomas" Danford and that the nickname of Dawson was Doss.

There is a 2 year age discrepancy in Doss' age from the 1880 to the 1900 census. The 1900 census is probably incorrect, as it does not agree with the tombstone inscripton.

Taken collectively, the above information leads one to conclude that Doss was the son of William Danford as enumerated in the 1860 Barbour county census.

1910 census in Coffee County, Alabama:
Danford, Doss Age 58
Laura M. Age 49
Arthur Age 20
Connie Mae Age 15
James A. Age 11
Ceburn (sic) Age 8
Martha (Mother) Age 77 (widow) This is Martha P. Gilmore, Laura's mother, not Doss'
(Niece) Age 6

"Dawson D. Danford" is buried at Bethany Church Cemetery. Directions: Take U.S. Highway 84 West thru Enterprise, Alabama, to Alabama Highway 134.
