Compiled & contributed DEC 2008, by Denise Hardin.
On a recent trip to Highland Home, Alabama I came across this cemetery a few miles from the Montgomery-Crenshaw County line on US 331, about a hundred yards from Henry Smith Road. The cemetery is in deplorable shape with many graves unmarked and covered in moss. I have pictures of the tombstones as well. Imagine my delight at having found the resting place of James Caffey! He was the son of John Hooper and Mary Elizabeth Ivey Caffey. --Denise--

Remount Cemetery
located on the corner of Harrison and Greenville Streets
in Montgomery. It is across from Alagasco’s Central Office. This cemetery
is in deplorable shape and I plan on transcribing the whole cemetery in the
fall. The city does not own it therefore it has been allowed to fall into
neglect as the city cannot seem to locate it’s owner. There is also
another part that borders Leak-Memory Chapel. Compiled & contributed by: Denise Hardin

THIS MARKER IS BROKEN INTO MANY PIECES AND THIS IS ALL I WAS ABLE TO READ.
Montgomery County (Skull) Cemetery
Located off McLemore Road just north of intersection with Atlanta
Hwy, on hilltop located in field on west side of McLemore. I opted for the
name Skull for this cemetery because that is what we found there--a human
skull perched atop an opened grave. The cemetery, which has apparently
been abandoned for some years, is VERY overgrown and has suffered EXTREME
vandalism. Several graves were open, markers were broken and overturned,
and the remains of one lady are clearly visible through a slab that had part
of a headstone through it, apparently used to break open the slab! :( Most
death dates, where markers were intact (sort of) were in the 1950s--surely
someone is still living who can identify this cemetery and its occupants????

Upon a sad, sad autumn day
A Lovely spirit winged its way
Across the shining silver sea
And all the world was dark to me
Flown from an earthly home of love
To many mansions up above
Up where the beautiful angels stay
My darling Johnnie waits today
Sometime somewhere I too, shall come
To that far off longed for home,
And there close by the Gates of Pearl
I know I’ll find my darling girl.
(Note: Meriwether descendants of we met at the cemetery said that this girl
was raised by Dr. John Lucius Meriwether.)
