ELIAS2 STRICKLAND (ELIAS1) was born August 1852 in Henry County, AL, and died Aft. 1910 in Holmes County, FL. He married JINEY A. 1881 in Henry County, AL. More About ELIAS STRICKLAND: Census: June 21, 1900, Henry County, AL, Cowarts Precinct #20, SD3, ED103, SH#17, Enumerator Nathan S. Fellows, P. O. Address: Cowarts, Population: 1884. Entry #297/297 (number of the left of the Census). This census report lists Elias Strickland, Jiney A. (wife), & children Marriage Notes for ELIAS STRICKLAND and JINEY A.: Elias Strickland and Jiney A. were listed with their children on the 1900 Henry County Alabama Census Report as being married 19 years. Jiney's last name is unknown. Elias' parents are thought to have been Elias Strickland and Synthia A. Starling from South Carolina. They moved to Henry County, Al abt. 1840. Elias' father purchased over 300 acres of land in Henry Co, but his name was spelled Elias Stricklin on the land record. Children of ELIAS STRICKLAND and JINEY A. are: i. GEORGE W3 STRICKLAND, b. January 07, 1882, Ozark, AL; d. July 26, 1948, Laurel Hill, FL; m. VERCIE NOY HATHAWAY, March 08, 1906, Vernon, FL. 3. ii. MATTIE ELIZABETH STRICKLAND, b. September 16, 1886, Henry County, AL; d. May 05, 1920, Covington County, AL. iii. MARY F STRICKLAND, b. February 1887, Henry County, AL; m. BLANK SNELLGROVE. Notes for MARY F STRICKLAND: Aunt Dot remembers Mary F. Strickland. Dot said that Mary used to visit Mattie's children in Andalusia, AL between 1921-1935 or so. She said that Mary and Aunt Rosie looked alike.....both were very short with black hair and brown eyes, and their facial features were almost identical. iv. HATTIE STRICKLAND, b. March 1889. v. RHODA STRICKLAND, b. December 1893. Generation No. 3 3. MATTIE ELIZABETH3 STRICKLAND (ELIAS2, ELIAS1) was born September 16, 1886 in Henry County, AL, and died May 05, 1920 in Covington County, AL. She married JOEL BENJAMIN GRANTHAM November 21, 1901 in Elias Strickland's home in Henry County, AL, son of JOEL GRANTHAM and CATHERINE ADAMS. Notes for MATTIE ELIZABETH STRICKLAND: Mattie Elizabeth Strickland Grantham's headstone inscription: "Sleep on Mother take your rest God called you home He knows best" The 1900 Henry County Census listed Mattie as being 15 years old and date of birth as being 1884. Mattie's headstone has the inscription of 1886, age 34. Rememberances of Mattie: The exact number of twins born to Mattie and Joel were unknown. They had several between 1901 and 1907. However, it is believed to have been many sets that were still born. She did have three live births that lived to be adults. Mattie died before any of her children were old enough to marry. Some of Mattie's older grandchildren remember seeing an old tin picture of her and her children, Willie Mae, Harvey, and Rosa. She is remembered as being a small woman with very long black hair and brown eyes and a beautiful face. Mattie may have been half Creek Indian, however, we have no proof at this time. She died shortly after having still-born twins in Andalusia, AL. Notes for JOEL BENJAMIN GRANTHAM: Joel Benjamin's headstone inscription: "Remember me in the by and by God take me to that Happy home on HIGH" Joel Benjamin Grantham was a tall, thin man with black hair and brown eyes. He told his children and grandchildren that he was a Cherokee Indian. The family picture that is in the possession of his youngest daughter, Josephine, is proof that his was indeed Cherokee Indian. He worked at the old Horseshoe Lumber Company in River Falls in the 1940's for a while with Uncle Hub Roper. Children of MATTIE STRICKLAND and JOEL GRANTHAM are: i. WILLIE MAE4 GRANTHAM, b. August 26, 1908; d. 1988, Andalusia, AL (Covington, County); m. HUBERT GIDARTHUR ROPER, November 04, 1922, Andalusia, Covington County, AL. Marriage Notes for WILLIE GRANTHAM and HUBERT ROPER: Willie Mae and Uncle Hub did not have any children. 4. ii. HARVEY J GRANTHAM, b. July 27, 1910, Dothan, Houston Co., AL; d. May 26, 1960, Red Level, AL. 5. iii. ROSA LEE GRANTHAM, b. June 08, 1914, Covington County, AL; d. 1994, Covington County, AL.
