Salt Creek Church Cemetery
Compiled & contributed March 2008 by Linda Hutchens
Located in Section 36, Township 17, Range 7 in Talladega County, Alabama on Salt Creek Falls Road just outside of Munford, Talladega Co., AL.
This is a beautiful little Church with a well kept cemetery across the road from the Church. There is a large marble monument near the Church building which reads:
THE STATE OF ALABAMA
TALLADEGA COUNTY
KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS, THAT I ELIAS ADAMS, FOR AND IN CONSIDERATION
OF THE LOVE AND AFFECTION I HAVE TOWARDS SALT CREEK CHURCH AND THE BRETHREN
OF THE SAME, DO HEREBY GIVE, GRANT AND CONVEY UNTO THE SAID CHURCH AND THE
BRETHREN OF THE SAME, ONE AND HALF ACRES OF LAND BEING AND LYING? IN THE SOUTHEAST
CORNER OR NEAR THE CORNER OF THE NORTHEAST QUARTER OF THE NORTHEAST QUARTER
OF SECTION THIRTY SIX, TOWNSHIP 17, RANGE 7, TO HAVE AND TO HOLD FOREVER.
WITNESS MY HAND AND SEAL THIS THE 23RD DAY OF JANUARY 1873.
WITNESS: W. D. WRIGHT ELIAS ADAMS (LS)
In my own research of the "Families" of Salt Creek Cemetery I discovered that quite a few members of the community in which the Elias Adams family lived left Alabama for the "west" shortly after Elias Adams gave the Salt Creek Church congregation the land for the Salt Creek Church in 1873. Elias Adams and his wife Elizabeth can be found in Saline County Arkansas in 1880 where they lived the remainder of their lives, however I can find no evidence of a tombstone for Elias and Elizabeth Adams in the cemeteries in which some of their descendant's are buried both in Arkansas and in Texas. Other associated family member's who remained in the community at that time joined them in Arkansas and Texas in later years.
There are numerous unmarked graves in the Salt Creek Cemetery, as well as numerous graves marked with what was once an inscribed fieldstone. The inscriptions on these stones have long since been eroded away with the passage of time. I did count and include here the individual fieldstone markers to give the reader an idea of just how many fieldstone marked graves are in the cemetery, however there are some spaces between some of the fieldstone which are large enough for a burial but no stone is visible so I did not include those spaces.
The Cemetery is located on a sloping hillside which runs paralell with the road, there is a rock and cement retaining wall which has been built for re-inforcement of the roadway embankment. The graves go all the way to this retaining wall, where they are on an angle, not paralell with the retaining wall. There is one grave at the very edge of this wall which is covered in cement which attaches to that retaining wall. This grave leads me to believe it is entirely possible that there have been graves lost due to road construction at some point in time.
As with most old cemeteris such as Salt Creek, sometimes it is just not possible to keep the rows seperate.
