As I was researching some obituaries in the Monroe Journal (the newspaper is on microfilm at the Monroe County Public Library in Monroeville and at the Alabama Department of Archives and History in Montgomery), I discovered that in the early 1920s (September-November 1920, February 1921, July 1921, June-September 1922) and again in 1931 (February-August), the Journal looked back at old publications of itself. In the 1920s, the years 1870-1898 were reviewed; in 1931, the Journal looked back at 1884-1910; each week the next year was reviewed. I was delighted to find that in those reviews there was a necrology (listing of death notices and obituaries) from those early publications. Below is a copy of those necrologies.

A few words about this list:

1. I have attempted to present these death notices in the order as they appeared in the reviews, and not in a pure chronological order. This is important, because several times a name was listed without a death date. This probably meant that the (undated) person died on the same date as the previous person in the list -- but I am not certain of this. Hence you will find several occasions where I have listed death date as “during xxxx” -- meaning a precise date was not given, but is possibly the same as the person in the list just before him/her.

2. Because the Journal reviewed certain years on more than one occasion, I found several discrepancies. I have attempted to list the info found in both reviews. Hence, some times you will find multiple names, dates, and death locations.

3. During July-August 1911, the Journal reviewed the May-November 1861 issues of The Southerner (a newspaper published in Claiborne). The Journal was not published June 1874-October 1875; in replacement of its own absence during that time, the Journal reviewed The Conecuh-Escambia Star (a newspaper published in Evergreen, Conecuh County, Alabama). On July 10, 1913, the Journal reviewed all issues of The Monroe Eagle (a newspaper published in Claiborne from January 1868 to February 1871). I have indicated a few death notices as having come from these “other” newspapers.

4. I discovered that the editors would many times interpret the old information. For example, in the July 20, 1922 review, Jack Hayle [sic] is listed as having died Oct. 10, 1888 at Nero; in the March 5, 1931 review Jack Hayles is listed as having died Oct. 10, 1888 at Randons. But because he was an uncle of mine, I went back to the Oct. 19, 1888 edition to find that it read: “Mr. Jack Hayles died at his home about 8 miles south west of Monroeville, on the 8th inst., from cancer. He was about 65 years old.” I suppose that the communities of Nero and Randons were/are located about 8 miles SW of Monroeville.

5. I would encourage a researcher to use this list only as an index to the old publications. I found that the reviews were not always accurate. For example, the March 26, 1931 review listed Georgiana Roley as having died Jan. 20, 1891 at Tekoa. She was my grandmother’s first cousin, so I went back and found the March 5, 1891 Journal edition that had the obituary for George Ann Roley who died Feb. 24, 1891!

6. On a few occasions, I have listed information that did not necessarily come from the reviews, but from the original obituaries and death notices. I have marked these people with an asterisk (*).

7. This is my second compilation of The Monroe Journal Death Notices. I discovered the 1911 and 1913 reviews after the first version was completed, and of course they are included in this compilation.

I hope what is presented here will be of some help to you. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this list.
